Duties and Responsibilities
5.1 Provides care to infants transitioning to extra uterine life.
5.2 Performs a variety of supportive and technical nursing skills and utilizes a range of equipment, supplies, medication and other modalities in carrying out specific medical orders for administration of medications and performance of specific treatments, monitoring techniques and other diagnostic, therapeutic and supportive measures.
5.3 Monitors and adjust specialized equipment used on patients such as incubators and ventilators in a safe and effective manner.
5.4 Establishes a good working environment in which patients receive a high standard of care, thus maintaining patients’ rights.
5.5 Monitors vital signs and initiatives corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology, communicates patient’s condition to care team.
5.6 Promotes continuous education to new parents about newborn care and breastfeeding.
5.7 Takes responsibility for the direct delivery of professional and competent patient care by promoting quality care standards.
5.8 Acts on behalf of or at the direction of the Head Nurse/Team Leader in setting and monitoring standards for patient care.
5.9 Participates in the monitoring of the planning, delivery of care and evaluation of the individualized patient care.
5.10 Informs the Head Nurse/Team Leader of any changes in circumstances which affect the standards of care.
5.11 Establishes and develops effective communications between nursing, support services patients and relatives.
5.12 Maintains safely and well-being of patients and staff in accordance with hospital policies and procedures
5.13 Provides a safe therapeutic, personalized physical and psychosocial environment for patient care.
5.14 Assists in the formation of nursing care standards/policies and supports the Head Nurse and the unit staff in its implementation.
5.15 Uses equipment and supplies in a cost effective and responsible manner and participates in the procedure for ordering supplies within the agreed budget as delegated.
5.16 Ensures that Infection Control practices are adhered to in accordance with approved Infection Control policies.
5.17 Ensures that students and temporary staff allocated to the ward have appropriate orientation, teaching and support in accordance with their curricular objectives and reports any matter of concern to the Head Nurse/Team Leader.
5.18 Participates in the care, custody and administration of medicines especially in handling narcotics and controlled medicines in accordance with the hospital policy
5.19 Documents and reports all accidents/incidents to Head Nurse/Team Leader.
5.20 Ensures that all nursing documentation is completed accurately and legibly and understands the importance and relevance of their confidential nature.
5.21 Assists in data collection for monitoring and statistical purposes.
5.22 Participates in staff orientation and on-going development programmes.
5.23 Is responsible for own professional development and growth and remains updated in current professional practices.
5.24 Is responsible for keeping updated in Infection Control, Fire and Safety and Disaster on a yearly basis.
5.25 Is responsible for keeping Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certification and updated on a two year basis. (Saudi Heart Association Recommendation)
5.26 Demonstrates knowledge of the hospital quality programme.
5.27 Takes an evidence-based approach to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
5.28 Demonstrates effective communication in the work place.
5.29 Leads quality improvement and facilitates change where appropriate.
5.30 Collaborates with interdisciplinary health team members in establishing the plan of care for selected patient population.
