Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient’s care in accordance with established policies and procedures; provides guidance, direction and coordination for assigned personnel in activities directed towards standards of patient care, safety and infection control.
  • Perform a variety of supportive and technical nursing / obstetric skills. Utilize a range of equipment, supplies, medications, treatments, monitoring techniques and other diagnosis, therapeutic and supportive measures in carrying out medical orders.
  • Provide nursing care for patients during their ante-natal and post-natal phase including nursing intervention of obstetrical emergencies if occurs.
  • Recognize emergency situations, intervenes appropriately initial stabilization of the mother and / or baby, pending arrival of the physician.
  • Provide nursing care of the newborn babies.
  • Monitor contractions and helps patient with breathing techniques.
  • Take and record patient’s vital signs, ascertains if problematic.
  • Administer pain medication as ordered, administer other medications to address specific medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
  • Able to take and understand cardiotocograph (CTG) tracings and take appropriate actions. Informs midwife and / or physician of any concerns.
  • Report any significant changes in patient’s condition to appropriate senior midwife and / or responsible obstetrician.
  • Able to competently nurse patients receiving magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) infusions.
  • Able to nurse patients who have received epidural anesthesia.
  • Able to manage and monitor patients having sedation.
  • Able to handle, use, administer and monitor blood transfusion and blood products.
  • Perform basic intravenous and phlebotomy skills.
  • Able to perform immediate care of newborn (clean, weigh, etc.).
  • Competent in recognizing obstetric emergencies, such as post-partum hemorrhage and ante-partum hemorrhage.
  • Ensure that safe infection prevention and control practices are adhered to.
  • Ensure patient’s bed is kept dry and clean, cleans up bodily fluids expelled before and after the birthing process.
  • Plan and provide patient education, relative to their understanding of pregnancy, childbirth and care of the infant.
  • Able to teach mothers the importance of breast feeding and encourage same.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained and rights are upheld.
  • Communicate clearly, precisely and comprehensively through established verbal and written reports.
  • Adhere to and enforces staff compliance with hospital / unit policies and procedures. Recommends corrective action as necessary.
  • Participate in all aspects of the unit total nursing program, such as patient care conferences, staff orientation, continuous education, meetings, special projects and offers suggestions for improving services.
