Duties and Responsibilities

– Assumes responsibility for quality of care delivered to the patients.

– Assesses patient’s vital signs, needs and conditions pre, intra and postoperatively and document it properly.

– Evaluates patient’s treatment and care and reports pertinent information to charge nurse.

– Documents care, observes physical and emotional symptoms and changes according to hospital policy.

– Maintains a safe and clean environment for the patient.

– Assumes responsibility for quality of care delivered to patients

– Respects the dignity of patients and maintains confidentiality.

– Provide health teachings to patient and their relatives pre and postoperatively.

– Coordinates with the reception nurse/ circulating nurse/ charge nurse for the details, considerations, and updates of the case to be handled.

– Collects all sterile instrument trays, supplementary instruments, supplies, sutures, blades, and other sterile equipment required for the surgical procedure to be performed.

– Reviews surgeons preferences to ensure all necessary sterile equipment and items are available and at hand.

– Checks if all equipment and machinery required for the surgical case to be performed is in the theatre and is functioning correctly (diathermy, suction, table or positioning equipment). Uses equipment in a safe and effective manner. Coordinates with the circulating nurse for any immediate concerns

– Performs surgical hand scrubbing, gowning, and gloving using aseptic technique and assists the rest of the surgical team in gowning and gloving (with surgeon/ s preferences) as needed.

– Practices strict aseptic technique in preparing the sterile surgical instruments on a draped sterile trolley (table and/ or mayo depending on the classification of a case) in order of anticipated use.

– Receives from the circulator all other required solutions, sterile items (e.g. supplemental instruments, supplies, sutures, blades) considering aseptic technique.

– Takes responsibility and conducts the first counting of instruments, sponges and sharps with the circulating nurse before the commencement of surgery.

– Participates actively during the Time-Out process with the members of the surgical team.

– Assist the surgeons with the skin preparing and draping of the patient as required.

– Recognizes the incision time with the circulating nurse.

– Organizes immediate surgical field (as arranged prior) by positioning of sterile equipment (mayo stand, suction, diathermy) with the assistance of the circulating nurse

– Assists the surgeon during surgery by passing instruments and other equipment in a prescribed manner (by following the extent and progress of the operation considering the anatomical structure.)

– Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by watching the progress of the surgery and by being familiar with the various steps of the procedure. Passes instruments and other supplies (sutures, ligatures) to the surgeon in a manner that does not require the surgeon to turn away from the wound site to receive it. Each instrument is placed firmly into the surgeon’s palm in such a manner that it is ready for use with no wasted motion. (Instruments are designed for specific purposes and the scrub person must be knowledgeable as to the use of each instrument.)

– Maintains an organized surgical field throughout the case so that instruments and sterile supplies can be handed to the surgeon quickly and efficiently.

– Maintains adequate sterile supplies and request extra supplies from the circulating nurse as required which are added to the original count. (Ensures that the circulating nurse wrote the additional supplies on the white board).

– Guards and monitors, consistently, the sterile field, immediately reporting and dealing with any breech of sterility or contamination of the surgical field surgical conscience.’

– Makes constantly aware of safety of the surgical team members and patients care of blades, needles, other sharps, and diathermy.

– Retracts tissue, cuts sutures, and sponge-dabs blood, or irrigate wound intra-operatively, when needed.
